SUB-THEME: REQUIREMENTS FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE.
TOPIC: MENTORSHIP I.
TEXT: 1 KINGS 19:19-21; 2 KINGS 2:6-7,13.
19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. Elijah went over to him, and put his mantle on him.
20 Elisha left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” He said to him, “Go back again; for what have I done to you?” [Luk 9:61]
21 He returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and killed them, and boiled their meat with the instruments of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and served him.
6 Elijah said to him, “Please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to the Jordan.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” Then they both went on.
7 Fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood opposite them at a distance; and they both stood by the Jordan.
13 He also took up Elijah’s mantle that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of the Jordan.
MESSAGE:
To mentor means to teach, advice and give help to a less experienced, and often
younger person. Mentorship is prime in God's agenda for continuous reproduction of people who will take over his plan in successive generation.
This is seen in Moses and Joshua, Elijah and Elisha, Jesus and the twelve disciples, and Paul and Timothy and Titus.
In today's texts, we saw how Elijah called and mentored Elisha and handed over the mantle of divine operation at the end of his
ministry. That gave Elijah fulfillment, but joy to Elisha. He prayed to have a double
portion of the spirit of his master and mentor.
Who are you mentoring?
Do not die with God's deposit in you; mentor someone day!
REFLECTION:
Check, you have something that you need to pass on to another.
PRAYER:
Lord, help me to mentor someone today. Amen
MEMORY VERSE OF THE MONTH: MATTHEW 25:21.
“His master replied. 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your masters happiness".
