JESUS' CALL TO LEADERSHIP
Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:18-25
Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." - Matthew 4:19
A true leader does not just focus on doing the job but on equipping people to do the job. If people do not feel empowered under you, you are not leading. Every leader is also a follower. If you don't learn to follow, you will not know how to lead. Jesus' call to the disciples was three-fold:
Follow Me: This was a call to TRAINING. A leader must start by
following another and learning the ropes. To follow is to observe. This involves paying careful attention. To follow also means to understand. The disciples asked Jesus questions. That is the key to understanding. To follow is also to imitate. Here you reproduce what you have learnt. Without observation, imitation can be dangerous.
I will make you: This is a call to TRANSFORMATION. The Lord will call you as you are but will not use you as you are. He will mould you if you yield to Him. The length of time it takes to mould you will be determined by your level of cooperation with God. Until God expands your capacity, you will always reduce things to your current level of thinking.
Fishers of men: This is a call to a TASK. It represents your assignment from God. Jesus used fishing because it was a language Peter could understand. He then took the gifts Peter had and used them for a greater cause. He used Matthew's tax recording experience to record the gospel and the genealogy. God redefines your gift and redirects your ambition to His kingdom.
Prayer: Father, unleash the leadership potential in me through training, transformation and assignment to tasks.
