The first worship song ever sung in the Bible was in response to a great victory. God had instructed the Israelites to ask for the riches of the Egyptian people—gold and jewelry—and they eagerly gave what they had. When Pharaoh changed his mind about letting the Israelite people go, he sent myriad soldiers on chariots and on foot to chase the people and bring them back to Egypt. Then the escaped slaves came toe-to-toe with the Red Sea. At the Lord’s command, Moses parted the waters, and a million Israelites passed through on dry land. And as the Egyptian soldiers chased after them with fast horses and strong chariots, the warriors were swallowed by the crashing waves of the sea returning to rest.
Moses’s sister, Miriam, couldn’t contain herself! The miracle was too amazing; the victory was too... well, victorious! And so she grabbed her tambourine and sang. And others joined in. What had appeared to be imminent death for them all became a story of great triumph.
Compared to God’s power, man’s power is tiny. The mightiest army, the harshest word, the cruelest rejection, or the darkest diagnosis can’t touch what God can do.
We may be facing the most complete defeat, but God says, “I’m just getting started.”
If the Israelites had allowed the expanse of a sea to convince them they were done for, they never would have crossed into the promised land. And for you: whatever threatens to take your joy, ask the Lord what direction to look as He does what He plans to do in your life.
God, the battle is Yours, and I will do my best to stay out of Your way as you fight on my behalf.
