Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.  — Luke 4:1–2 (NKJV)  When Scripture speaks about the wilderness, it doesn't describe a place of abandonment—but of formation.    Jesus did not wander into the wilderness by accident. He was led there by the Spirit. In silence, hunger, and solitude, Jesus was not weakened by God's absence but strengthened through dependence. This season invites you into that same slowing down—learning not to rush past difficult moments, but to listen for what God may be shaping within them.  A closer look at Jesus in the wilderness  The NKJV Wiersbe Study Bible, available with Bible Gateway Plus, reflects on this moment and why it matters:  Lk 4:1–13 The account of Jesus' temptation is proof that the Father's approval was deserved. Jesus is indeed the "beloved Son" (3:22) who always does whatever pleases His Father (John 8:29). The first Adam was tempted in a beautiful garden and failed. The Last Adam was tempted in a dangerous wilderness (Mark 1:13) and succeeded. Catalyst: Facing Temptation    The account of Jesus' temptation (4:1–13) exposed the tactics of the enemy, and it reveals to us how we can overcome when we are tempted. We have at our disposal the same spiritual resources that Jesus used when He faced and defeated Satan: prayer (3:21), the Father's love (3:22), the power of the Spirit (4:1), and the Word of God (4:4).    This experience also helped prepare our Lord for His present ministry as our sympathetic High Priest; we may come to Him for the help we need to overcome the tempter. The Book of Hebrews tells us that Jesus was tempted in the ways we are (Heb. 2:16–18; 4:14–16). We have in heaven the interceding Savior who has defeated the enemy completely.    Satan tempts us to bring out the worst in us, but God can use these difficult experiences to put the best into us. Temptation is Satan's weapon to defeat us, but it can become God's tool to build us (see James 1:1–8, 13–17).  Why the wilderness matters  This perspective helps us see the wilderness not simply as a place of testing, but as preparation. What Jesus faced there shaped Him for what came next—and Scripture invites us to see our own wilderness seasons in that same light.    Insights like this help Scripture slow us down.
