House of Representatives has urged the federal government to rescind its decision on the cancellation of the 2020 West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) exams due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Legit.ng recalls that minister of education, Adamu Adamu, on Wednesday, July 6, announced that schools under the control of the federal government would not be reopened for the forthcoming WAEC exams.
Top presidential aide Tolu Ogunlesi, who made this known via a thread of tweets on his Twitter account, also said the education minister attributed the decision to the spike in Covid-19 cases nationwide.

But foreseeing damages the decision is bound to cause, the lower chamber said the examination should be held albeit under the safety guidelines of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
Presenting motion on the floor of the House, Nnolim Nnaji and other lawmakers said the withdrawal of Nigerian students from the examination posed a great danger for the education sector.
FG has been urged to reverse its decision on the withdrawal of Nigerian students from 2020 WASSCE.
“The negative and culminating effects of the government‘s action in seeking to withdraw Nigerian students from the examinations will be devastating on our educational system and Nigeria’s economy at large,” the lawmakers argued.
Meanwhile, a legal icon Afe Babalola has also called on the federal government to reverse its decision on WAEC, saying if the move is not reconsidered it may lead to criminality.
The senior lawyer argued that the withdrawal of Nigeria from the external examination will endanger the future of over one million students who have registered.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that following the increasing cases of coronavirus in the country, the federal government
warned the state governments against the reopening of schools because of pressure from the children and parents.
Minister of state for education, Chukwuemaka Nwajiuba, who spoke on Monday, June 22, while reacting to questions at the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, also said the Federal Ministry of Education did not give Oyo state any guidance to reopen schools.
