Marathon Motors, whose owner is Haile Gebreselassie, has assembled its first Hyundai electric car. And the long-distance legend presented the car as a gift to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
According to state media, Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, it is Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed himself who requested the company to start assembling electric cars.
It is said that the car’s battery could be charged anywhere, and no need to go to a charging station.
“…this morning I was happy to receive the first electric car fully assembled in Ethiopia by Marathon Motors. No emissions cars help reduce pollution in our growing cities,” Abiy Ahmed wrote on his social media page.
In a ceremony organized at the palace to hand over the car, Athlete Haile Gebresellasie said the production of an electric car could help save foreign currency needed for the purchase of oil.
Marathon Motor Engineering was launched in 2009 as an importer and distributor of Hyundai passenger, commercial vehicles, and parts in Ethiopia.
Earlier in this month, his resort properties in Shashemene and Batu towns of Ethiopia estimated to be hundreds of millions of birr, were destroyed as radical ethnic Oromo nationalists unleashed a war mostly non-ethnic Oromo Ethiopians under the cover of “protesting the killing of Hachalu Hundessa.”
His investment, now destroyed, employed hundreds of youth in the region. “The property is not just mine. It is the property of other Ethiopians too,” he remarked after his investment in those towns was destroyed.
In April of this year, his agri-business investment in Tepi, South Ethiopia, worth 28 million birr was vandalized by radical groups.
Haile Gebreselassie himself was born and raised in Arsi the area where followers of Ethiopian Orthodox Church were beheaded in the days following the assassination of Hachalu Hundessa.

Sudan Arrests Former Speaker of Parliament
July 26, 2020 (KHARTOUM) - A Sudanese police force on Sunday arrested a prominent Islamist and former Speaker of Parliament, Ibrahim Ahmed Omar.
Sudan's National Assembly speaker Ibrahim Ahmed Omer (Photo SUNA)Security sources in Khartoum said that he had been arrested as a result of his participation in a demonstration organized by Islamist groups, on Friday to protest against legal amendments recently made by the transitional government.
Omer is facing criminal charges under articles (13) and (14) of the Empowerment Removal Committee’s law, and cases related to corruption and the exploitation of influence.
"The former parliament speaker violated the law dissolving the National Congress Party, which prevents him from engaging in any political activity as a member of the (banned) party."
The Sudanese police on Saturday, also, arrested five foreigners, due to their participation in the protests that took place in the capital, Khartoum, on Friday.
Among them, Mahmoud Suleiman Al-Hasanat, a Palestinian from Gaza the preacher and Imam of the Sheikh Mohamed Abdel Karim Mosque on the 60th Street in Khartoum. Also, an Indonesian, and two Yemenis.
Last Friday, Sudanese Islamists demonstrated in Khartoum, after the weekly prayer, for the second week, to protest against new constitutional amendments that "violated Islamic traditions."
On July 9, the Sudanese government finally approved amendments to some articles of the Criminal Code, including granting non-Muslims the right to make and drink alcohol.
The amendments also abolished an article on the apostasy, according to which the abandoner of the Islamic religion is sentenced to death.

Sudan’s Women Demonstrate for Fair Representation in Transitional Government
Groups of No to Women's Repression initiative outside the premises of the Sudanese cabinet in Khartoum on 26 July 2020 (ST photo)
July 26, 2020 (KHARTOUM) - Hundreds of women headed Sunday to the Sudanese Council of Ministers to call to ensure women full participation in the transitional authority structures.
The women chanted slogans like: We want our full rights, Long live the women’s struggle, The woman is a partner, not a decor, No discrimination and no let-down.
The rally was organized by 64 women groups and civil society organizations, to express their anger against the poor female representation in government institutions, despite the active role they played during the revolution that toppled the rule of President Omar al-Bashir on April 11, 2019.
The women’s organizations signed a memorandum entitled "Our Complete Right", which Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok received through an official from his cabinet.
There was widespread controversy in Khartoum when some political forces refused to nominate women for the position of governor. Their rejection forced the Prime Minister to demand re-nomination through state coordination and insists that women be on the list.
Also, when the Unionist Alliance choose a female candidate for the Nile River State she faced strong objections from the local community leaders.
Also, another woman Amal Ezzedine was appointed for the Northern state.
The memo stressed the need to maintain the two female governors by "all means".
The groups also demanded to increase women’s participation in all structures of the transitional authority and to expedite the formation of the Legislative Council where 40% of its seats should be allocated to women.
The memo called to set up the Women’s Commission and all the commissions mentioned in the Constitutional Declaration.
Ihssan Fakiri, head of the No to Women Repression initiative, told the Sudan News Agency that women’s groups nominated 7 women for the position of governor but the prime minister did not appoint any of them.
"You cannot appoint 12 ambassadors and no women are included in the list," she further said alluding to 12 diplomats Hamdok selected.

Sudan to Send More Troops to Darfur After Deadly Attacks
27 July 2020
About 300,00 people died and two million were displaced during the conflict in Darfur, the UN says
The Sudanese government is sending more troops to the restive Darfur region, following a spike in violence there.
Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said the forces would protect people during the farming season.
Unidentified gunmen killed more than 60 people in the region on Saturday, and another 20 the day before, the UN said.
Hundreds of thousands of people have died in fighting between government forces and rebels since 2003. Millions have been forced from their homes.
More than a decade later, people finally started returning home in time for this year's July-November planting season after a government-sponsored deal was reached two months ago.
But this has led a new conflict over land rights between the people who took over the land with those who have returned.
In the latest upsurge, several villages were burned, and markets and shops looted, said the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
"The escalation of violence in different parts of Darfur region is leading to increased displacement, compromising the agricultural season, causing loss of lives and livelihoods and driving growing humanitarian needs," it said in a statement.
No group has so far said it carried out the attacks.
Darfur conflict: A bloody stalemate
Former President Omar al-Bashir, who was overthrown last year, is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes and genocide in the region.
Last week, the 76-year-old went on trial in Sudan's capital Khartoum in connection with the 1989 military coup that brought him to power.
He could face the death penalty if found guilty.
Bashir has already been convicted of corruption.

The World Health Organization is warning that malaria-related deaths in sub-Saharan Africa could more than double this year because of disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The health emergency has shut down large-scale treatment and prevention programmes around the globe.
In Kenya, medical workers say many people suffering from malaria are staying away from health facilities.

Coronavirus: South Africa Death Toll Could be 'Far Higher'
23 July 2020
BBC World Service
Infections are soaring in South Africa, which now has the fifth highest number of confirmed cases worldwide
South African researchers say the number of deaths from coronavirus could be far higher than the official toll.
The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) report says excess natural deaths rose by 17,000, a 59% increase compared to past years.
Professor Debbie Bradshaw, one of the authors, said it revealed a "huge discrepancy" in the numbers.
On Thursday the country said there had been a record 572 deaths in the last 24 hours.
South Africa currently has the fifth highest number of confirmed cases worldwide with more than 400,000 infections and a death toll of 5,940.
This is a far lower death toll than in other countries that have fewer confirmed cases, for example the UK.
In a televised address on Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered the closure of public schools for four weeks amid the sharply rising case numbers.
What does the report say?
SAMRC released the Report on Weekly Deaths in South Africa late on Wednesday.
It shows that between 6 May and 14 July this year there were 17,090 excess natural deaths - far higher than in past years and higher than researchers had forecasted.
How fast is coronavirus spreading in Africa?
That number suggests there have been 11,000 unexplained deaths.
Prof Bradshaw said these reports "have revealed a huge discrepancy between the country's confirmed Covid-19 deaths and number of excess natural deaths".
Early on in the pandemic, South Africa recorded 9% fewer deaths on average compared to previous years, which has been attributed to a ban on alcohol and the national lockdown.
It is not clear if the higher number of deaths being recorded more recently is purely down to the pandemic, but researchers think this could be a factor. There are also concerns people are dying because they are staying away from hospitals, for fear of becoming infected or because of a lack of space.
SAMRC President Prof Glenda Gray said the rise "may be attributed to both Covid-19 deaths as well non-Covid-19 due to other diseases such as TB, HIV and non-communicable diseases, as health services are re-orientated to support this health crisis".
On Thursday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told parliament by video link that the SAMRC figures were "comparable to countries like India and Russia, but significantly lower than the UK or Spain."
How has South Africa been handling the pandemic?
South Africa is the worst affected nation on the continent.
President Ramaphosa imposed a strict lockdown in the country at the end of March, even banning the sale of cigarettes and alcohol in a bid to ease pressure on health workers.
The restrictions were enforced by soldiers on the streets in a bid to bring the outbreak under control. Authorities later lifted the alcohol ban as business reopened and people returned to work.
But infection numbers have soared in recent weeks. President Ramaphosa reintroduced the alcohol ban in July as the country grappled with a chronic shortage of hospital beds and state hospitals - on which 80% of the population depend - faced unprecedented strain.
Confirmed cases are now rising by more than 10,000 a day.
What about other African countries?
Overall, there are now more than 770,000 confirmed cases throughout Africa.
At the start of the month, the World Health Organization said five countries - Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa - account for more than 70% of all cases on the continent.
But there has also been a worrying rise in cases in countries like Kenya and Namibia in recent weeks.

IMF Executive Board Approves US$4.3 Billion in Emergency Support to South Africa to Address the COVID-19 Pandemic
July 27, 2020
IMF
The COVID-19 outbreak is leading to a sharp economic contraction and significant financing needs in South Africa.
The IMF approved US$4.3 billion in emergency financial assistance under the Rapid Financing Instrument to support the authorities’ efforts in addressing the challenging health situation and severe economic impact of the COVID-19 shock.
Once the pandemic is behind, there is a pressing need to ensure debt sustainability and implement structural reforms to support the recovery and achieve sustainable and inclusive growth.
Washington, DC: The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today approved South Africa’s request for emergency financial assistance of SDR 3,051.2 million (US$ 4,286.5 million or 100 percent of quota) under the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI) to meet the urgent balance of payment (BOP) needs stemming from the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic is evolving in South Africa at a challenging time. With severe structural constraints to growth, economic activity has weakened over the last decade despite significant government spending, resulting in high unemployment, poverty, and income inequality. Like in other emerging economies, financial market volatility has increased during the pandemic, but the financial system is showing resilience.
The RFI will help fill the urgent BOP needs originating from the fiscal pressures posed by the pandemic, limit regional spillovers, and catalyze additional financing from other international financial institutions. It will complement the authorities’ strong policy response to the crisis and their planned post-COVID-19 fiscal consolidation and reforms to promote growth that benefits all South Africans. The authorities have committed to manage the IMF’s emergency financial assistance with full transparency and accountability.
Following the Executive Board’s discussion, Mr. Geoffrey Okamoto, First Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair, issued the following statement:
“South Africa’s economy has been severely hit by the COVID-19 crisis, reporting the highest number of cases in sub-Saharan Africa. A deep economic recession is unfolding as the decline in domestic activity and disruptions in the global supply chain resulting from the COVID-19 shock have added to a pre-existing situation of structural constraints, subdued growth, and deteriorating social outcomes.
“The authorities responded swiftly to the crisis. The June Supplementary Budget Review presented to Parliament contains a plan to reprioritize budget appropriations toward health and mitigation spending and devote additional budgetary outlays to protect the poor, the unemployed, and the most affected businesses. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) took strong and timely action by lowering significantly the policy rate and ensuring adequate liquidity conditions in the financial system.
“The emergency financing under the RFI will help fill the urgent BOP needs that emerged as a result of the pandemic and thus contain the economic disruption and its regional spillovers. The RFI will also help catalyze other disbursements. The authorities’ commitment to transparently monitor and report all use of emergency funds is crucial to ensuring COVID-19-related spending reaches the targeted objectives.
“There is a pressing need to strengthen economic fundamentals and ensure debt sustainability by carrying out fiscal consolidation, improving the governance and operations of SOEs, and implementing other growth-enhancing structural reforms. The COVID-19 crisis heightens the urgency of implementing these efforts to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth. Specific reform commitments at the time of the October Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement will be a critical step to buttress the credibility of the reform efforts and should be followed by steadfast implementation. Efforts to preserve the central bank’s inflation mandate and proactive bank regulation and supervision, particularly for small banks, will also be important."

Zimbabwe Government Will Not Tolerate Anarchy . . . Warns US Against Interference
26 JUL, 2020 - 00:07
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa addressing a press conference on the arrest of Hopewell Chin'ono while permanent secretary Mr Nick Mangwana look on in Harare yesterday. Picture: John Manzongo
Sunday Mail Reporters
THE arrest of political activists Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume last week, was a pre-emptive move by authorities to quell a potentially violent foreign-funded insurrection meant to destabilise the country and unconstitutionally topple the Government, a Cabinet minister said yesterday.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa told a Press conference in Harare that the Government would not sanction demonstrations planned for July 31, in the interest of public health and in line with both the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Covid-19 national lockdown regulations.
She said Chin’ono and Ngarivhume were arrested for inciting violence and not for exposing corruption as is being alleged by some Western countries.
Authorities, the minister said, had uncovered a plot by foreign powers led by the United States Embassy in Harare to promote anarchy under the guise of “peaceful demonstrations”.
Setting the record straight on the arrest of Chin’ono and Ngarivhume and their subsequent appearance in court, Minister Mutsvangwa said there were deliberate attempts to misrepresent the reasons behind the pair’s arrest.
“We have noted with dismay, a well-coordinated local and international misinformation, and disinformation media campaign where the duo are said to have been arrested for supposedly exposing alleged corruption cases in Government.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Hopewell Chin’ono was not abducted. He was lawfully arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police. And he was not arrested for exposing corruption. He was arrested for using his social media accounts to incite Zimbabweans to violently overthrow the Government.”
Interference
Minister Mutsvangwa took a swipe at the US government, saying the stance it had taken in defending Chin’ono in particular, was curious.
“The role of foreign powers in this plot to instigate an illegal regime change in Zimbabwe is made apparent by a set of events and statements that followed the police operation,” she said.
“Within minutes of the arrival of the police at Mr Chin’ono’s home, the US embassy was already all over this issue which is between a sovereign country and its citizen, by tweeting and trying to bring pressure to bear on the Zimbabwean Government so it would not enforce the law of the land. Its particular interest in this one person is curious.
“Other Western embassies who usually take the USA’s lead joined in this irregular interference by tweeting and releasing statements which were calculated to obstruct the course of justice in a hosting country.”
Minister Mutsvangwa said “even after Zimbabwe’s independent Judiciary had delivered its verdict on the duo’s bail application, a senior member of the US administration issued a very derogatory and undiplomatic statement against the Government of Zimbabwe, showing condescending disrespect to a sovereign country”.
“Zimbabwe is keen to engage with all members of the community of nations, but will not surrender its sovereignty as a trade-off for this. All what Zimbabwe seeks is mutual respect and non-interference in its internal affairs.
“Going forward, Government will not compromise on Zimbabwe’s national security and expects all foreign embassies hosted here to behave with propriety as set out in the Vienna Convention,” she said.
On Thursday, US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Mr Tibor Nagy exposed his bias against the Government when he commented on the case that is currently before the courts.
He tweeted: “The Zimbabwean Government has denied Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume their freedom while the corrupt remain free. When will the Government uphold the people’s Constitutional rights to freedom of political expression and freedom of the press?”
Minister Mutsvangwa said the US’ stance of meddling in Zimbabwe’s internal affairs was surprising given that President Donald Trump’s administration had cancelled public events in their home country.
“The ongoing USA elections are a big exercise in democratic expression. Even President Trump has had to cancel the Convention of the Republican Party in Jacksonville for fear of Covid-19. Why can’t the detractors and doom mongers equally copy this act of noble political restraint?
“And why can’t the American and Western embassies provide counsel to their regime change charges that this is not the hour to play dice with the lives of Zimbabweans? This is the season of Black Lives Matter after the choking to death of George Floyd by a cruel white police officer in Minneapolis.
“We have travelled and suffered from their past depredations. It’s not democracy they want. After all we paid a heavy price to attain it from the conquering colonials. They did not give up Zimbabwe on a platter. It’s cruel self-enrichment from our resources that they seek. Please why can’t you give Africa a break? As Zimbabwe we are saying: WE CAN’T BREATHE,” she said.
Corruption
Minister Mutsvangwa said President Mnangagwa’s administration had no qualms with media reports on corruption as both the public and private media had free reign to expose graft.
“Even though Hopewell Chin’ono writes about corruption, he is not unique in this regard. All newspapers in Zimbabwe, including independent publications, have written extensively about corruption in Government and the private sector,” she said.
“None of the journalists who have written about the subject of corruption have been arrested for publishing the same. This is because the Government and the President of Zimbabwe acknowledge and appreciate the role the media plays in the investigation and exposition of corruption.
“The Standard and The Zimbabwe Independent newspapers together with the State media, reported on the NSSA scandal that resulted in the arrest of Minister Priscah Mupfumira. None of the journalists from these newspapers were arrested or censured for reporting on this case.”
Minister Mutsvangwa said President Mnangagwa’s appointment of Mr Trevor Ncube, who is the owner of the country’s largest independent media house, Alpha Media Holdings, to the Presidential Advisory Council (PAC), showed his openness to diverse ideas.
She said the President has also affirmed his commitment to promoting a favourable media environment after the repeal of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).
“Since coming into office as leader of the New Dispensation, His Excellency President Mnangagwa has provided a favourable working environment for media practitioners to conduct their business unfettered,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
“The Zimbabwe Independent from AMH publishes articles accusing Government officials of corruption on a weekly basis without fail but this has not attracted any arrest of the journalists concerned.
“The Second Republic through Parliament has repealed AIPPA, which in the past was used against journalists and replaced it with a raft of legislation aimed at protecting the rights of journalists to practice their profession freely and the rights of citizens to information concerning the areas of interest and concern.”
President Mnangagwa’s directive to order an investigation into the Drax International scandal that subsequently led to the axing of former Health and Child Care Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo, showed a high-level commitment to fight graft.
“As a result of those investigations, several arrests were made. The most prominent of those arrested was the former Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Obadiah Moyo, who was charged and relieved of his duties as Minister of Health and Child Care,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
“It is, therefore, false to state that no action has been taken against the corrupt individuals fingered by Hopewell’s exposé. The President has consistently shown his unflinching commitment to fighting corruption by setting up a robust legal infrastructure to fight this economic scourge.
“He has also spearheaded the funding of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) as a way of capacitating it to deliver on its Constitutional mandate. This has seen an unprecedented arrest and summary dismissal of two serving Cabinet ministers in a short space of time.”
She cited the conviction and jailing of high profile individuals such as former Cabinet minister Samuel Undenge, former Director of State Residences Douglas Tapfumaneyi and former Zimbabwe National Roads Administration finance manager Simon Taranhike and others as being indicative of Government’s “Zero Tolerance to Corruption” policy.
The Minister said Government remains committed to implementing sound interventions to fight Covid-19 and protect its citizens from the pandemic.
“All the aforesaid is happening in the context of Zimbabwe’s fight against Covid-19 pandemic. At this moment Zimbabwe like the whole world faces the threat of the pandemic. The Zimbabwe Government has done reasonably and surprisingly well to date. Indeed it has confounded detractors and doom mongers.
“Hopewell and Ngarivhume belong to that camp of evil wishers. The begging question is why call for a violent uprising in the midst of a raging and ravaging Covid-19?”, Minister Mutsvangwa said.

ZANU-PF Youth League Condemns Planned Protests
26 JUL, 2020 - 00:07
Sunday Mail Reporters
THE Zanu PF Youth League has urged law enforcement agents to deal with the planned violent demonstrations being organised by opposition activists and all those involved.
In separate statements yesterday, Zanu PF Youth League provincial structures said the planned demonstrations are meant to further an illegal regime change agenda.
Zanu PF Mashonaland West Youth League chairperson Cde Vengai Musengi said holding a demonstration during a pandemic poses a danger to public health.
“Opposition elements are keen to cause violence at the end of this month,” said Cde Musengi.
“Such acts pose a serious threat to the safety of members of the public and seriously undermine social order. They warrant society’s most severe condemnation.”
He said the organisers of the demonstrations were using social media to promote attacks on State institutions and private property. The police, Cde Musengi said, must use appropriate force to disrupt the planned demonstrations and arrest those involved.
Youth League chairperson for Matabeleland North Province, Cde Tamuka Nyoni, said opposition elements were trying to destabilise the country through demonstrations.
“The provincial league, as much as other progressive forces in our country, is saddened and disheartened by news circulating in the electronic and print media regarding the 31st of July so called ‘mass protests’ by regime change agenda advocates,” said Cde Nyoni.
“They are trying by all means to polarise the peaceful environment enjoyed by the citizenry, which is trying to come to terms with the reality of this global pandemic which is making lives unbearable.”
He said the organisers are criminal elements who intend to overthrow a constitutionally-elected Government which has a mandate that runs until 2023.
“We, therefore, call upon the citizenry to fight these forces in order to maintain the peace that we enjoy in the midst of this pandemic. The Mat North Youth league appeals to like-minded and progressive formations who share our vision, to shun these calls and exercise maximum unity.”
Zanu PF Masvingo Youth League chairperson Cde Brian Munyoro said the demonstrations were meant to sacrifice innocent lives and please the opposition’s Western masters.
“Demonstrations are harmful to our economy and yet some are encouraging their followers to participate in the destruction of our economy,” said Cde Munyoro.
“The foolishness of some journalists-cum-activists will not yield anything. During this Covid-19 pandemic we are supposed to be practicing social distancing, but some are planning to expose their brothers and sisters to the disease by demonstrating. This is tantamount to witchcraft of the worst order.
“As the Masvingo youth league, we urge our fellow comrades not to participate in this satanic and disgraceful act but instead work hard towards economic development of our beloved nation.”
Zanu PF Matabeleland South Youth League chairperson Cde Washington Nkomo described those behind the demonstration as mercenaries with no morals.
“It is sad that this is coming at a time when the whole world is battling the vicious Covid-19 pandemic,” said Cde Nkomo.
“All responsible leaders and organisations the world over are busy complementing their governments’ efforts to combat this deadly disease and helping families that have been exposed to hunger due to Covid-19.
“What we have here is a group of mercenaries with no morals nor conscience. It becomes apparent that our law enforcement agencies should enforce the law without fear and use appropriate force to stop these shenanigans.”
He said it was un-Zimbabwean to needlessly destroy other people’s property and livelihoods.
“We will not stand akimbo when people’s properties are destroyed and when our much cherished peace is disturbed by a few rascals. We stand to defend our communities against such criminality and support officers on the frontlines.”
In a statement last week, acting Zanu PF deputy secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Tendai Chirau said party youths will defend the country against hooliganism.
“It is unfortunate that as the rest of the nation is fighting a deadly pandemic and seeking new avenues to improve the national quality of life, some elements on the lunatic fringe still find pleasure in engaging in destructive hooliganism disguised as demonstrations,” said Cde Chirau.
“With particular reference to the fake demonstrations planned for 31 July, we are aware that these attempts to cause mayhem in the country are part of a broader sponsored regime change strategy that has in the past yielded nothing but violence.
“As Zanu PF Youth League, we register our preparedness to stand in resolute defence of legitimate national interests, in defence of innocent breadwinners and their dependants who are being threatened with disruptive, senseless violence and injury.
“We further reiterate our conviction that the only acceptable path to political power in Zimbabwe is through the plebiscite. In the 2018 elections the voice of the majority emphatically spoke in favour of Zanu PF running the country until 2023.
“The threats to remove the Government that we hear of are unconstitutional and we remain ready to defend the Constitution of Zimbabwe and accordingly warn all putschist elements to hold their peace.”

The People on Battle Footing, Challenging All Walls
History is full of obstacles and none have been able to detain us. Let the walls of the Moncada tell the story - walls that prided themselves on their strength, believing themselves invincible they cradled barbarity and torture in their entrails, witnessed the shedding of young blood at the hands of hired killers, and yet the Revolution advanced triumphantly over that rottenness and buried it forever

Here is the people of a thousand battles, the people of a blazing history, the tireless defender of justice and truth.
Here we are, not battered, not subjugated, not tired. Scars, yes, there will always be scars, because to conquer rights you must face the bullets, and your skin suffers, and even your soul, but if you survive, as we have done, there is no power on earth that can extinguish the inexhaustible brilliance of a dignified life when you know you are free.
By what right can anyone, whip in hand, order us to our knees, moved by fear or indolence, by the thundering of the vain pride of those who call themselves owners of the air we breathe, of the sky, even of the sun, of the soil watered with the sweat of those who never surrender, who persevere.
Perhaps because they have built a rotten wall from the foundations, do the lords of arrogance imagine that we will no longer look up, that for an instant we will even question our dreams?
History is full of obstacles and none have been able to detain us. Let the walls of the Moncada tell the story - walls that prided themselves on their strength, believing themselves invincible they cradled barbarity and torture in their entrails, witnessed the shedding of young blood at the hands of hired killers, and yet the Revolution advanced triumphantly over that rottenness and buried it forever.
A being with the sick soul of power is capable of many evils; we know this all too well. When arrogance takes root, it grows uncontrollably, deformed. Empires are built by the arrogance of many men, and the machinery they unleash then lives on by itself, and human beings become only the means to an end.
Power blinds, allowing the powerful to believe that everyone, sooner or later, will succumb to its pressure. After all this time, they have not understood that the island that gave birth to the Mambises, to the Centennial Generation, and took these children by the hand and dressed them in olive green, nothing can defeat us. The cancer of domination has spread; they are incapable of thinking.
Here we are, yes. So said those insurgents, as we now say, as our children say, and generations to come will say. Here we are, eternal rebels, preventing the hatred of our enemies from diminishing us. Because this is what the life of the revolutionaries demands in a world divided and marked by inequality, every morning is for us a St. Anne’s Day.
With our dead - alive – in our hearts, with their will tattooed on our skin, with their drive running like blood through our veins, facing infinite challenges and fully aware of the harshness of our times, we maintain what they, the saviors of Martí always had: certainty of the justice of the work defended, and the conviction that victory belongs only to those who are able to sacrifice, struggle, and triumph.

"With a bloody human eye in his hands, a sergeant and several men showed up at the dark cell where Melba Hernandez and Haydée Santamaria were held. Addressing Haydée, and showing her the eye, they said: This is your brother's, if you don't tell us what he didn't, we'll tear out the other one. She, who loved her courageous brother more than anything else, answered with dignity: If you gouged out one of his eyes and he did not talk, much less will I."
These were among the chilling words spoken by the young lawyer Fidel Castro Ruz, describing the outrages committed against those who assaulted the Moncada garrison, on July 26, 1953.
This brutal crime committed by Sergeant Eulalio Gonzalez, known as "El Tigre", was much discussed in Santiago, because he took it upon himself to disseminate the story - even on a city bus when he discovered the presence of the mother of the victim - Abel Santamaría Cuadrado. He dared to say for all to hear: "Well, I did gouge out a lot of eyes and I intend to continue …” At that time, the Moncada crimes had not yet come to a halt.
Before the actions of July 1953, Haydée and Melba had participated in the underground organization, the Centennial Generation Movement, under the leadership of Fidel.
The two women, acting as nurses, left the Siboney farm at dawn on the 26th, accompanied by Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy, the only three unarmed combatants. With them were some twenty young men led by Abel, the Movement’s second in command, who had the mission of occupying the Saturnino Lora Civil Hospital and preventing the Moncada troops from doing so.
With the exception of Ramon Pez Ferro, every one of these rebels were later imprisoned and murdered, like No.34, the label given to one of the bodies examined by the forensic doctors in a courageous, detailed description:
No.34: "The corpse was examined, dressed in trousers labeled SA-LO-OP, apparently dressed as a patient; wearing a shirt with no bullet holes, with a wound where his left foot was severed, a bullet wound in the epigastrium (entrance), an exit wound in the inter-scapular region, one in the left maxillary region, outer face (entrance wound), an exit wound on the right side of the face, a retro-auricular wound, that is, in the right retro-auricular region, with an exit through the left frontoparietal; the abovementioned clothing was impounded, with the direct cause of death being intercranial, thoracic and abdominal bleeding and the indirect cause being a firearm bullet."
The "OP" noted, is very significant. It shows, as in other cases, that the corpse had been one of the revolutionaries who occupied the hospital.
When the surprise assault plan failed, the Moncada troops moved to the Saturnino Lora, located in front of the garrison.
Abel had decided to fire on the Moncada, to give Fidel and the other comrades time to withdraw. In the meantime, Haydée and Melba, with the help of several nurses, urged the rebel forces in the hospital to dress as patients and get in beds in different areas. OP was the Ophthalmology ward. The two women went to the pediatric ward. Dr. Muñoz, wearing his professional lab coat, did not expect any problem, if the soldiers occupied the hospital. The others dispersed around the building.
Abel was one of the last to occupy a bed and insisted to Haydée and Melba: "Fidel is the one who must live." All the revolutionaries were alive when the dictatorship’s soldiers entered the hospital and moved them to the Moncada, manhandling them along the way. One incident occurred, indicative of the dictatorship’s brutality, and of what was to come. A guard decided to shoot the doctor in the back, with the two nurses looking on. Mario Muñoz was the first to be killed.
The dramatic scene that Fidel described, during the Case 37 trial, was followed by another crime meant to devastate Haydée. But they did not succeed. Guards showed her the "remains" of her beloved Boris Luis Santa Coloma, who had gone to the hospital when the surprise assault was disrupted, to rescue her and Melba.
The feats of these two women did not end at the Moncada, nor with the trial. As pioneers in the struggle, they were leading participants in the process that continued, and eventually triumphed.
They were among Fidel’s most trusted comrades, who he wrote from prison on the Isle of Pines, giving them the task of publishing his self-defense statement, known as History Will Absolve Me. He had painstakingly reconstructed the text under the most difficult conditions, weeks after developing it mentally in the Boniato prison and improvising its delivery during the October 16 trial. Two impressive accomplishments.
Shortly after Melba and Haydée completed their sentences in the Guanajay women's prison, they were able to have a massive run of the speech published.
These were crucial moments in the underground struggle: no money, no support other than that of friends, like those who offered a television set for a fundraising raffle.
No "prestigious" printing house would take on the task of editing the Moncada statement. But despite the hostile climate, they managed to secretly print 10,000 copies at a small printing facility on Lombillo Street, near Ayesterán, which were distributed, under their direction, throughout the country, with the help of a small group of young people. In a rental car owned by the driver Gustavo Ameijeiras, with five pesos Lidia Castro had given them, the trip to the island’s east began, since Fidel requested that it be distributed there first.
The two Moncada women would be stalwarts of the Revolution for their entire lives. Both of them, in their work, devotion, courage and originality, were exceptional.

Cuba and the Complex Relationship Between the Individual and the Collective
When a cause is just, it will find a place within the Revolution. Perhaps this is what Fidel meant when he said that there was room for everyone in the Revolution

Just recently, the 59th anniversary of Fidel's quintessential words to Cuban intellectuals was commemorated. One passage in the speech is particularly noteworthy. Fidel said, and I quote: "The Revolution… must act in such a way that the entire gamut of artists and intellectuals who are not genuinely revolutionary, find that within the Revolution they have an arena in which to work and to create; and that their creative spirit, even if they are not revolutionary writers or artists, has the opportunity and freedom to be expressed. That is, within the Revolution.”
He added, immediately thereafter, "This means that within the Revolution, everything; against the Revolution, nothing!” Speeches should not be interpreted independently of the historical moment and the context in which they were delivered, but in these words Fidel addresses a contradiction that continues to be relevant, perhaps one of the most significant faced within a revolutionary process: the complex relationship between the individual and the collective.
Liberalism takes this contradiction to an agonizing level. Stated individual freedoms are a formality and end up being effective only for those who possess economic power, or when they do not directly affect the interests of these powerful groups. The history of social movements on a global scale has shown that individual freedoms, for the historically dispossessed, must be a collective conquest under certain conditions, and that their continuity must be defended over time, also collectively. Where collectives have been splintered, captured, or corrupted, individual rights and freedoms have been brutally swept away, with those affected lacking the resources to defend them. This is what we have seen occurring with the increasingly precarious nature of work over the last decades on a global scale. Today it is difficult to find a job with a minimum of protected labor rights, historical conquests of the working class which are now endangered.
***
The imperative of valuing the collective leads us to reconsider the individual, which cannot be annulled. The collective must be a vehicle for individual interests to stand a chance of being honored. Thus, personal dilemmas should be placed in the light of a collective context, which is not always simple. Julio Cortázar did this with exemplary acuity when, in March of 1980, at the Casa de las Américas, he said: "I have not hidden from anyone my conviction that at this point the critical horizon should open up more in Cuba, that the media - as some leaders have already pointed out – have not reached the level they could have, and that there are a number of things that could be done and are not being done or could be done better. But I make these criticisms always starting from a sentiment I call the joy of confidence, I make them as I see and live the Cuban Revolution’s great number of positive accomplishments in all fields and, above all, I make them without stupidly anchoring myself in what I am, That is, a writer, not confining myself to the exclusive criteria of the intellectual at a time when an entire people, against all odds, despite errors and stumbling blocks, is today a people infinitely more worthy of its Cuban identity than in the times when it was vegetating under alienating, exploitative regimes.”
The people of whom Cortázar spoke are precisely the collective subject of the historical process that is the Cuban Revolution. And when I say people, I am not referring to a homogeneous bloc. To think that way is untenable. The people of Cuba are heterogeneous in their living conditions and in their desires, denying this today makes no sense. What then defines this collective subject that makes itself felt when it marches through the plaza, approves a Constitution or ignores the "opposition" in Cuba? Perhaps a structural consensus continues to exist on the basis of fundamental principles that have been constructed alongside a sense of Cuban national identity (hence its power), through a complex historical process of struggle, resistance, demands, great sacrifice and devotion as the cost of a desire: the sovereignty of the Cuban nation and the defense of a system that is considered more just insofar as it guarantees, in a universal and inalienable manner, a set of collective rights, that is, to all men and women equally, with an effectiveness in this sense has made its presence known these days, saving lives with names and surnames, beyond statistics.
This is the biggest obstacle facing the "opposition" in Cuba. No social mobilization can be triggered by an "opposition" manufactured in Washington, with interests far removed from the collective consensus of Cubans, given that they are connected to the economic interests of power groups with which the people do not identify. In short, there has been no Cuban "opposition" that was not a made-in-USA product. This is not a paranoid view of the enemy; it is a reality recognized within the U.S. itself. The private press and other political actors in Cuba are financed by some of the most discredited and malicious organizations of the international right, and we must be prepared for a context in which this reality becomes increasingly present.
With the rise of social media, the Cuban "opposition" is diversifying its face and we are no longer confronting only groups in Miami that continue to spin a narrative of hate, but also new actors and platforms within the island itself, although trained and supported from abroad. They constantly manipulate symbols that have value within the collective imagination and capitalize on existing social problems. Of course, I am not referring to those who - outside of state media but without foreign financing - are creating valuable materials on the internet reflecting a critical perspective on current Cuban society, which enrich the debate on our reality from Marxist and de-colonialized positions, which contribute and in no way detract.
In the recent period, perception of the right to participate in public decision-making has increased in Cuba: Cuban men and women debate all areas of national life, be it a local architectural decision or one involving the borders of an entire country. There are voices that take advantage of this context to manipulate public opinion in the media regarding state administration and institutional work. We cannot ignore this reality, but it is also true that these manipulators do not have the upper hand. Despite the haters, there is a popular sense of defending the common good. The need for government efforts at the local level to develop mechanisms for greater and more profound popular participation is key. Making a regular practice of consultation, transparency, and the provision of timely information on decision-making processes is imposed as a work philosophy absolutely essential to the development of socialism.
***
In March of 2020, a national program to combat racism and racial discrimination was announced. The adoption of a Decree-Law on animal protection was approved this year. And it will be necessary to continue creating working platforms to analyze, debate and develop alternatives to resolve problems present in Cuban society today, which will allow for the deepening of the democratic, just character of Cuba’s political system. This cannot be done outside of context of socialism. Capitalism today is exacerbating all of these problems throughout the world. The transition to socialism does not solve these problems naturally or spontaneously, as something inherent, but it does create better conditions for these problems to be analyzed, debated and worked on. Inclusive, transparent platforms for building dialogue and consensus are needed. When the causes are just, they will find a place within the Revolution and its institutions. Perhaps that is what Fidel meant when he said that there was room for everyone in the Revolution.
***
No one receiving payment from abroad to change Cuba has ever presented a decent proposal to our people. Fighting tooth and nail for Cuban men and women to preserve our lives under adverse conditions, since Cuba is a poor country, without sacrificing our sovereignty in the least, is a proposal worthy of this people. Perhaps that is what Fidel meant when he said everything within the Revolution and nothing against it. Although there are many things, as Cortázar would say, and revolutionaries recognize, that should be done better for the collective good, so individuals have ever greater and fuller possibilities of being.

Land of redemption, heroic mother, hardened by struggle and sleepless nights. Through your streets and mountains hope of victory reigned. Here freedom took a stand and left ignominy behind forever.
Santiago, your history has earned you the title of heroic, and no word defines you better. You know well what it took to raise the Revolution from its foundations. Many days, you wore red and your exceptional children became the upholders of Martí’s ideals. You wept for those who gave their lives to the cause, you understood their hatred for the murderers who sought to dash their dreams, and never gave in. You were, are, and will be the fertile land where seeds of a better future grow.
On that 26th of July, more than six decades ago, you sealed your commitment to all the sacrifices to come. Every bullet in the Moncada’s wall was a promise from you to be forever true to those who, with no other option, chose to give themselves body and soul to the battle for the dignity the country was demanding.
Witness to the horrors unleashed by the impotent who could never bend the will of the Cuban people, your tears made you stronger. You knew that this was the beginning of the tyrants’ end, and took the path of that brilliant young lawyer and his companions in struggle and ideals.
Since then, for you every day is the 26th. You have grown with the untiring work that dignified you and the entire nation, grateful for your dedication, appreciative of your hospitality and willingness to give your all, if necessary, to ensure that the most beautiful of flags, that of the solitary star, may wave with the grace that only freedom can grant.

Responsibility and Discipline, Essential in Times of COVID-19
During yesterday’s meeting of the COVID-19 prevention and control task force, a new outbreak in the province of Artemisa was analyzed

Thirteen new COVID-19 cases were confirmed this Wednesday in the Artemisia municipality of Bauta, an event which raises the incidence rate to 2.52 per 100,000 inhabitants, over the last 15 days, in the province.
Analysis of this situation was the first point on the agenda for the prevention and control task force meeting yesterday, July 22, led daily by President Miguel Díaz-Canel and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero.
Minister of Public Health José Angel Portal reported the decision to establish a local transmission event in the municipality, implying the implementation of rigorous preventative measures.
The zone now in quarantine - he explained - is one of the most central in the city of Bauta, and includes the commercial downtown, covering 237 blocks with a total of 28,559 inhabitants.
He added that in other municipalities where contacts of the 13 diagnosed patients have been detected, strict surveillance has been initiated to prevent further incidents of contagion.
Associated with this situation, Prime Minister Marrero insisted on strict adherence to quarantine measures that guarantee control of the situation in the province, and maintain national stability.
"No one enters and no one leaves," he said. Maintaining isolation and avoiding activities that involve large groups of people is essential at this time, he added, likewise emphasizing the importance of keeping the population well informed.
Given Bauta's proximity to the capital, strict control measures were also adopted this province to prevent possible contagion, especially critical as Havana is moving closer to meeting benchmarks established to transition to the second phase of the recovery period.
As we move toward a new normality, Cuba faces many challenges, and meeting them successfully depends on the responsibility and discipline of all.

Another Helms-Burton Lawsuit Fails
A Miami federal judge dismisses claim based on Title III of the illegal Helms-Burton Act, against Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise operator which includes Cuba among its destinations

Miami federal judge James Lawrence King has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a Florida citizen, under Title III of the illegal Helms-Burton Act, against Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise operator which includes Cuba among its destinations.
The dismissed case, one of the first filed based on the infamous Helms-Burton Act, was initiated by Javier Garcia Bengochea last year in the South Florida U.S. District Court and sought compensation on the grounds that the plaintiff had commercial property rights to waterfront property used by Carnival since 2016, in the port of Santiago de Cuba, according to The Wall Street Journal.
"The decision could portend difficulties for plaintiffs seeking to use the provision," the Journal noted. Other U.S. judges have dismissed similar legal challenges against MSC Cruises S.A. and Norwegian Cruise, which cited Title III of the Helms-Burton, an extraterritorial law that impacts not only Cuba, but the U.S. people and third parties, as well.
The announcement by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, and the Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security, to eliminate, as of June 5, 2019, all general licenses for "people to people" group educational trips and deny licenses to non-commercial aircraft - as well as passenger and recreational vessels, including cruise ships - severely impacted the number of visitors to Cuba, deliberately causing severe economic damage to the country.
The move has affected not only the tourism industry, but also individual lodging providers and the self-employed in our nation.
The prohibitions additionally limit the right of U.S. citizens to travel and those of many sectors interested in doing business on the island. In fact, companies such as Carnival, Norwegian Cruise and Royal Caribbean lowered their economic growth projections in 2019 following the decision made by the Trump administration to further restrict travel to Cuba.
The genocidal White House policy toward our nation has not been eased, even under the extreme conditions created by the pandemic. "During these months of COVID-19, more than a dozen extreme sanctions have been imposed against trade, banking transactions and donations of necessary medical equipment and supplies," noted Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez recently, on Twitter.

PORT OF SPAIN.— The President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC), Brian Lewis, advocated for gender and race equality in world sports, in an article published in the local newspaper Newsday.
Since he assumed the TTOC presidency, Lewis has defended non-discrimination in sports and broadened his struggle in solidarity with many athletes, following the May 25 police murder of George Floyd in the United States, the newspaper reported.
He has called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to lift the ban on U.S. medalists Vince Matthews and Wayne Collett, following their historic protest at the Munich 1972 Games, where they won gold and silver, respectively, in the 400-meter race. During the medal ceremony, they conversed as their country's anthem was played, purposefully displaying an attitude of indifference in protest against racial discrimination.
Lewis told Newsday that the suspension, which has been in effect for 48 years, is incomprehensible, and called for the reinstatement of the African-American athletes to their rightful place in the world Olympic movement.
Collet died of cancer in 2010, so his recognition would be posthumous. A year later, Matthews was inducted into the U.S. track and Field Hall of Fame.
Following the Floyd case, several international federations have supported the demands of athletes to protest racial discrimination and advocate inclusion on courts and in stadiums.
After weeks of protests against racism in the United States, the owners of the National Football League (NFL) Washington Redskins team agreed to change the name of the franchise.
Pressure on the team's owners following George Floyd's murder finally buried the nickname the team has used since 1933, which has been regularly denounced as an insult to American Indians.
A statement was released saying, "In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing that the team will undergo a thorough review of the team's name."
Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians have also committed to evaluating their name. The team's manager recently stated that it's time to change and move forward.

SOMALIA'S PARLIAMENT OUSTS PRIME MINISTER IN NO-CONFIDENCE VOTE
Khaire and President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed have been tussling over whether to delay a national election due in February next year, with the prime minister insisting it go ahead and the president favouring postponement.

MOGADISHU - Somalia’s parliament ousted Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire in a no-confidence vote on Saturday, as a simmering power struggle between him and the president came to the fore.
Khaire and President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed have been tussling over whether to delay a national election due in February next year, with the prime minister insisting it go ahead and the president favouring postponement.
President Mohamed elevated deputy prime minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled to prime minister in an acting capacity, a statement issued by his office said, citing the need for continuity of government programmes.
The president’s allies have also accused Khaire of failing to stabilise the security situation.
“The government failed in its promise on the preparation of a clear plan for the one man, one vote election,” said Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman, the speaker of parliament, referring to the first direct election since civil war erupted in 1991.
The Horn-of-Africa country has been holding elections through representatives like elders in the past decade, due to insecurity caused by al Shabaab militants in most areas.
Mohamed Abukar Islow, the internal security minister and a key ally of Khaire, accused the speaker and the president of plotting to remove the prime minister to extend their terms.
“It is a dark day,” Islow said, terming the move unconstitutional due to the requirement that an election be held every four years. Khaire, a former oil company executive, was not immediately available for a comment.
The president pledged to hold “a satisfactory election” within the schedule, but the Forum of National Parties, a leading opposition grouping, was sceptical.
“The president is breeding political chaos that will be difficult to manage... We warn against any attempt aimed at term extension,” the group said.
Rashid Abdi, an independent Horn of Africa analyst, said Khaire’s removal was inevitable because of differences with the president and the prime minister’s ambition to be president one day.
“What was surprising was the swiftness with which it was done. There was no debate or negotiations,” Abdi told Reuters.

Zimbabwe President Mourns ex-Tanzanian Leader
25 JUL, 2020 - 00:07
Herald Reporter
PRESIDENT Mnangagwa yesterday paid tribute to former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa who died on Thursday at a hospital in the country’s capital city of Dar es Salaam after a short illness at the age of 81.
In a letter to his Tanzanian counterpart President John Magufuli, the President saluted the late Cde Mkapa for his peace-building efforts not only in the East African region, but across the continent.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Zimbabwe, and indeed on my own behalf, I convey our deepest condolences to you, and through you, to the family and to the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, on the death of the former President of United Republic of Tanzania, Mzee Benjamin William Mkapa, on 23 July 2020,” read the letter in part.
The late Cde Mkapa served as Tanzanian President from 1995 to 2005.
Born on November 12 1938, Cde Mkapa became Tanzania’s president in 1995 and served until 2005 before handing over to Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.
Upon his retirement, Cde Mkapa was part of various peace missions across the continent, including the mediation team that helped resolve Kenya’s post-election conflict in 2008.
The third President of independent Tanzania, Cde Mkapa played a crucial role in leading peace initiatives in the great lakes region.
“Our prayers are with the Mkapa family and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania during this period of mourning. We hope that the nation will find solace in the legacy that the late former President leaves behind him, including his immense contribution to the achievement of peace, stability and economic development of the United Republic of Tanzania, the East African Community, the Southern African Development Community, and indeed the whole African continent,” the President said.
Cde Magufuli early yesterday announced the death of the former Head of State after a short illness, which forced him to be admitted at a Dar es Salaam hospital.
In a statement, Zanu PF acting secretary for Information and Publicity and party spokesperson Cde Patrick Chinamasa said the former president was one of greatest and most loyal sons of Africa.
“Zanu PF is no stranger to the late Cde Mkapa, who led Tanzania’s revolutionary party at a crucial time after the transformation of SADCC into SADC. The people of Zimbabwe are indebted to the late President Mkapa as one of the resolute and candid Pan-Africanists who stood with our nation in calling for the unconditional removal of illegal sanctions imposed on our people.
“We remember Cde Mkapa as a firebrand African statesman, who during his time as President of Tanzania championed the cause for peace, unity and oneness for the African people in the face of neo-colonialism. Zanu PF salutes the late President Mkapa as a gallant champion of peace, unity and stability to which he committed himself after his presidency,” he said.
Cde Chinamasa said Cde Mkapa worked for the cause of peace in many African states where he was instrumental in conflict resolution.
“Most importantly, Zanu PF remembers the late President Mkapa as a leader who worked tirelessly to consolidate and grow relations among revolutionary parties in the region. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.
Several African leaders yesterday sent their condolences to the people of Tanzania as they remembered a continental giant who helped nurture peace on the continent.
African Union Commission chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat was among several leaders who sent their condolences via social media.
“It is with deep sadness that I learnt of the passing of Mzee Benjamin Mkapa, former President of Tanzania. A statesman particularly remembered as an indefatigable peacemaker in the East African region. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, the people and the government of Tanzania.”

B.W. Mkapa: “Mwalimu Taught Me the Importance of Listening”
25 JUL, 2020 - 10:07
by Phyllis Johnson
Zimbabwe Herald
Ben Mkapa was a colossus in Africa, like his mentor Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, but he did not see himself that way.
“Mwalimu Julius Nyerere was undoubtedly the greatest influence on my personal growth as a leader and on my career,” he said in his memoirs. “I definitely owe an immense debt to Mwalimu for teaching me the importance of listening.”
The late former President of the United Republic of Tanzania (1995-2005), H.E. Benjamin William Mkapa believed passionately in equality and liberation and the future of Africa, and he saw himself as a servant of the people. When he saw inequalities, he spoke about it, and he spoke his mind.
For the current President of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli, Mkapa was his mentor.
Mkapa was Mwalimu’s foreign minister during the last stages of the liberation of Zimbabwe, including the Lancaster House negotiations, and he often spoke out in support of land reform in Zimbabwe, coming from Tanzania where the land belongs to the state and is used under lease for 33 or 99 years.
He became the third President of Tanzania, and he was a popular president, notable for being honest and forthright. He won the presidency in 1995 with 62 percent of the popular vote, in the first multiparty elections, and increased this to almost 72 percent the second time he faced the electorate in 2000.
Mkapa was President of Tanzania by the time of the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZIDERA) when sanctions were imposed by the US Congress, effective 2003, and he firmly opposed that, through speaking out as well as lobbying behind the scenes. He acted on what he believed in.
He believed in African unity and the removal of colonial boundaries, and in regional integration through the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
“Our solidarity during the political liberation can serve as a strong anchor of economic transformation. SADC has a lot of successes to be proud about. We must not shy away from celebrating our collective achievements inspired by our common history,” he said last year in the annual SADC public lecture.
And he believed in peace. When he stepped down as President in 2005, he continued to be active in mediation and some of his successes can be seen in the DRC, Kenya and Burundi.
He served his country, his continent, and his people. But he did not think this was extraordinary. This was his duty.
As President of his country, he prioritised economic development, stabilizing the macroeconomic environment and the exchange rate, widening the space for local and foreign investment, and reducing inflation to less than five percent by the time he stepped down in 2005.
The women movement in Tanzania saluted him for his commitment to implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. He was instrumental in the passing of the SADC gender protocol, and insisted on putting the guaranteed parliamentary seats for women into the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.
“We want an Africa where there is equality of gender, equality of opportunity, promise of a good healthy life, promise of an educated society, promise of a leadership that thinks more about service than being served.
“We want all of that, borders to be removed and so on. Why don’t we have it?” he asked at a Summit of former and serving leaders of Africa during Rwanda’s presidency of the African Union.
“We often think of the problem of leadership as being the problem of the leaders alone. Fine, they must have integrity, they must not be selfish, but to succeed they must be able to implant those attitudes in the population. Their political parties must be organized in such a way that they reflect those values and embody those values in their political interaction.
“We are multi-ethnic societies. What basic values have we embodied in these societies? Equality? Or is it diversity? How do you convert diversity into strength rather than diversity as a cause for war and internecine fighting? Can it be done? It can be done. Its been done in centuries before, in Europe and elsewhere. Why can’t it be done in Africa?
“But we don’t have the will because we are selfish, we are concerned in the here and now, in the seat I am in. That’s wrong,” Mkapa said.
“Its ironic but you have a continent with the best natural resources of any others, as of today, but they are being exploited for the sustenance of those who enslaved us and continue exploiting us rather than being exploited for our own ends and emancipation.
“Why? Because you do not recognize the degree of present-day enslavement, economic enslavement, and the necessity for emancipation. Its ironic, we talk about development but we don’t stop to define what development means in our situation, such as a universal system of education and health delivery. Now that is development, with assured health and education.
“The fault is with us…We really must rethink Where we are, Why we are what we are, What we can be, and How we can.”
H.E. Benjamin William Mkapa, who passed away this week at age 81, was born on 12 November 1938 in Lupaso village, Mtwara Region, in southern Tanzania near the border with Mozambique. His father wanted him to be a priest but he dropped out of the seminary, and went to St Francis College at Pugo, near Dar es Salaam, where he found his Mwalimu (Teacher) was Julius Nyerere.
He was a journalist with a degree in English literature who had a passion for reading and knowledge, and later on, the vision of a research centre where information could be collected and analysed from a regional perspective, and could circulate across borders.
Thus he encouraged us to establish the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre and he served on the first advisory council, through his friendship with my late husband, David Martin, who was an investigative journalist, one of the best, with similar passions for equality and liberation.
Phyllis Johnson is an author and historian, and a founding Director of the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC) in Harare.
