  • Holy Spirit Grad Greg Roman Wins NFL Asst. Coach Of The Year
BALTIMORE — It's been 30 years since Greg Roman graduated from Absecon's Holy Spirit High School. Roman earned NFL Assistant Coach of the Year on Saturday for his work as Ravens offensive coordinator.
In his first year with the Ravens, Roman built an offense that capitalized off quarterback Lamar Jackson's abilities. The team broke a 41-year record, rushing for 3,296 yards.
The Ravens were also the NFL's highest-scoring team, averaging 33.2 points. Voters unanimously chose Jackson as league MVP. Roman received 41 of the 50 votes for NFL Assistant Coach of the Year.
"I would like to thank the commitment from every coach, player and organizational staff member for this award," Roman said in a statement via baltimoreravens.Com. "Out of this commitment, special and amazing achievements were born. We look forward to coming together again in the spirit of team to create a bright and exciting future."
Roman was born in Atlantic City and grew up in Ventnor. Roman's family was strapped for cash when he was 10, so he got several jobs. He worked as a paperboy and as a "runner" on the beaches, according to The Press Democrat.
The money he and his family made helped pay for his education at Holy Spirit High School. He also returned to the school as a volunteer assistant coach in 2008.
Roman has coached for several NFL teams, also serving as offensive coordinator for the 49ers (2011-14) and Bills (2015-16). The coach joined the Ravens as an assistant coach in 2017 before getting promoted to offensive coordinator.
